The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is a prestigious and beloved event that captures the spirit of endurance, community, and patriotism. Held annually in Washington, D.C., and Arlington County, Virginia, the MCM is celebrated not only for its rigorous course but also for its impeccable organization, managed by the United States Marine Corps. This year, our company had the honor of being one of the sponsors for this grand event. We had the privilege to handle supporting the Marine Corps Marathon and contributing to its seamless execution by managing a critical logistics challenge: the storage and delivery of 15,000 gallons of water across five races.

The Marine Corps Marathon: A Brief Overview

Established in 1976, the Marine Corps Marathon is the fourth-largest marathon in the United States and the ninth-largest in the world. Known as “The People’s Marathon,” it welcomes runners of all ages and backgrounds, drawing participants from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and over 50 countries. This event, which takes place on the final Sunday of October, just a few weeks before the United States Marine Corps’ birthday on November 10, is a celebration of physical fitness, community spirit, and the exemplary organizational skills of the Marine Corps.

Our Role in the 2024 Marine Corps Marathon

Being a sponsor of the MCM is a privilege, and we were thrilled to contribute to the event’s success by managing the water logistics. With 30,000 runners participating, the need for efficient hydration is paramount. Our team was responsible for storing and delivering 15,000 gallons of water across five races, ensuring every participant had access to water when they needed it most.

    The Logistics Challenge

Ensuring that water is available and properly distributed during a marathon is no small feat. It requires meticulous planning, coordination, and execution. This year, Don Combs, our operations VIP, was responsible for orchestrating this complex operation. Don’s expertise and dedication were instrumental in putting together the logistics plan that ensured every runner had access to water when they needed it most.

Behind the Scenes with Don Combs

Don Combs approached the task with military precision, much like the Marines organizing the event. His plan involved detailed scheduling, coordination with suppliers, and a robust team to handle the delivery process. Starting from the early hours of the marathon day, our team worked tirelessly to transport and set up water stations. This way, we ensured that each of the seven stations was fully stocked and ready to serve the runners.

Don’s leadership and the hard work of our logistics team were evident as the marathon unfolded smoothly. Each water station functioned flawlessly, providing the much-needed hydration that kept runners going strong throughout the 26.2-mile course. This seamless operation was a testament to the planning and execution skills of our team, inspired by the organizational excellence of the Marine Corps.

The Spirit of the Marine Corps Marathon

The MCM is more than just a race; it’s a community event that brings together people from all walks of life. It’s known for its supportive atmosphere, where runners, spectators, and volunteers come together to celebrate endurance and perseverance. The marathon also includes various additional events, among which are:

    • MCM50K
    • MCM10K
    • MCM Kids Run

This made the weekend full of fun activities for everyone.
